This is a great story and one I can resonate well with (not having a great childhood due to my father being an alcoholic) - it is within our power, by the Grace of God and the gift of the Holy Spirit, to overcome our circumstances and to become good earthly fathers even if our own was not. We can either live in the freedom of the Gospel or we can accept becoming a victim of our circumstances and blame everyone else. Only one of those leads to a life worthy of the calling to which we are called by our Lord and Savior.
