Pick up ball games, summertime battles over control of the woods, building forts, swimming in the creek; that was my childhood. We left after breakfast, threw some random food in our pockets to eat for lunch on the way out the door and finally came home for supper, after hearing our mom yelling out our names. It never ceased to amaze me how far her voice could travel. All of us, friends from grade school through high school, never got bored, or, at least, so bored we couldn't find a way out of it. We were bloodied, mosquito bit, bruised and sunburnt all summer long. We had our own rules and worked out the problems by ourselves. I am so very glad to have grown up in the '60's and '70's. Kids today will never know what they missed, though I suspect more than a few feel the tug of real adventure from time to time.
I agree with everything that you say, but there's another huge problem that stands in the way of children, especially in the big cities. They aren't safe. Many of the centers of cities are now the lawless zones of criminals, criminal immigrants, and the mentally ill. That problem needs to be fixed now!!
