It has been thirty years since I read "The Bell Curve" by Richard J. Herrnstein and Charles Murray. The authors thoroughly researched and documented their findings published in the book, one of which was that by age twelve any gains thought to have existed from preschool would be entirely gone. They even recommended that children not start school until age six or seven, especially for boys.
Leftists fiercely attacked the authors, even though I don't remember any evidence presented to refute the findings published by the authors.
That looks very similar to what we were being taught in Kindergarten back in 1959-1960. There was also a grade called Pre-Primer, which was for the kids that weren't quite ready for first grade after Kindergarten, and needed a little more time to mature.
